Eligibility Criteria for the EU Blue Card Netherlands

To apply for a Blue Card in the Netherlands, you must:

  • Have a valid work contract for at least 12 months
  • Hold a recognized university degree (minimum bachelor’s level)
  • Receive a minimum gross annual salary of €70,800 (as of 2025; this amount may be adjusted annually)
  • Be employed in a highly skilled position related to your qualification

The Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) will verify both your academic qualification and the employer’s compliance with national labor standards.

Application Process – How to Get the Blue Card Netherlands
  1. Find a job with a Dutch employer offering a qualifying position and salary
  2. Employer applies on your behalf to the IND (Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst)
  3. Submit supporting documents:
  4. Copy of your valid passport
  5. Employment contract
  6. Certified diploma or academic certificate
  7. Proof of salary level
Once approved, you receive a residence permit with the remark “EU Blue Card”

In most cases, the employer submits the application. If you’re already legally residing in the Netherlands, you may apply directly at an IND office or online (if applicable).

Special Notes & Rights

  • The Blue Card is usually issued for up to 4 years, depending on the employment contract
  • You can apply for permanent residence after 5 years, of which at least the last 2 years must be in the Netherlands
  • After 18 months, you may move to another EU Blue Card country under simplified conditions

Blue Card holders may bring their spouse and children.

  • Family members receive a residence permit
  • Spouses are allowed to work without a separate work permit
  • There are no language requirements prior to entry
